The Randomiser: The Myth Makers

I wasn't really sure what to expect from The Myth Makers going into it. I have a fairly low tolerance threshold for so-so comedy and, while it has a good reputation, it is also Doctor Who attempting comedy in the 1960s and I had not been overly impressed by The Romans.

Actually it is surprisingly good )

I would genuinely love to see what The Myth Makers actually looked like. Doctor Who so rarely whole-heartedly tries to do comedy and this has some great dialogue and comic moments. I would have liked to see the actors faces as the lines were delivered. Watching telesnap reconstructions of old Doctor Who is definitely a fans-only past time, but if you feel up to the effort then I would say that The Myth Makers is more rewarding than many.

The Eater of Light

Three formative things from my childhood/teenage years: The books of Rosemary Sutcliff, the folk-music inspired output of Clannad, holidays spent in Scotland.

To be honest, I also rate Survival pretty highly, so The Eater of Light would have had to try pretty hard for me not to love it. I'm not sure I can even remotely claim to be looking over this story with an unbiased eye. I loved it a lot. It does reassure me that The Teenager also loved it however, despite considerable sceptism about Rosemary Sutcliff (occasionally I give her the books, she tactfully ignores the gesture), and no memories of Scotland (or Survival).

She does like Clannad though, but I'd argue that the music here, while definitely folk-inspired, is not particularly Clannad-ish.

Spoilers under the Cut )

I loved this. It hit me in all my nostalgia weak points and handled this particular TARDIS team, which I already liked, perfectly enough to convert me from well-disposed to a fan. The Teenager said she thought it might be her favourite Doctor Who story. I'm not sure I'd necessarily go that far (this is no Blink!) and I'm almost frightened to see how it would stand up to a rewatch because I'm very aware that external factors were effecting my ability to think critically about this. But on a single viewing, I'd say it was my favourite Twelfth Doctor, Bill and Nardole story.

DEAR CROSSOVERING CREATOR | FAQ

If you're new to exchanges at AO3 and confused about how sign-ups work, read this tutorial about signing up for gift exchanges.

As a reminder: You're allowed to choose multiple fandoms from within a greater franchise in a single request/offer, but we cannot prevent AO3 from matching on those 2 fandoms. For example, you might offer Stargate Atlantis, Stargate SG-1, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, but if someone else requests Stargate Atlantis and Stargate SG-1, AO3 might pair you.

Put short, if you prefer to receive or create a crossover/fusion between 2 distinctly separate franchises, we encourage you to refrain from putting 2+ sub-franchise fandoms in a single request/offer.

For more information about requests and offers for this exchange, please continue reading.  )

Signups open in 10 minutes! (Finally, right?) That means it's also time to start sharing your Dear Crossovering Creator Letters!

These letters are 100% optional but highly encouraged (particularly due to the nature of this exchange). If you've never participated in an exchange like this before, a Dear Creator Letter is a post at your DW/LJ/Tumblr/Blog, etc. detailing your requests and giving your assigned creator ideas for possible art or fic. These letters also include your likes, dislikes, and any triggers you migh thave. You can link them here, as well as in your sign-up form. How you format or write them is entirely up to you.

If you have any triggers (things that may cause you harm if you read about them), we highly recommend that you make that clear in your letter as well as in the optional details on your signup. Not every participant clicks through to letters, and this is the best way to cover your bases so that your creator will not unintentionally use your triggers.

For more info and great examples of what we mean check out the following links: The Yuletide FAQ or letters from previous years.

Keep in mind that letters are completely optional, which also means that creators are in no way required to follow the optional details. The only requirements are that they use the fandoms you matched on and that they respect your DNWs. Essentially: Optional details are optional.

If you are posting a link to your letter here, we ask that you copy/paste the following when you comment:

Tagset is open!

This year's tagset is now visible. (Alphabetical view.)

We approved 534 nominations this year. That's 329 more than last year! Please check the list even if your fandom was rejected, as it may have been approved under a related tag.

For those who like to keep track year-to-year, this year's most nominated exchange was Leverage with 9 nominations.

We rejected only 3 fandoms:
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Star Trek Beyond — As they're installments in a series. We view these like nominating one book in the Harry Potter series. However, we're open to accepting installments next year.

  • The Hunger Games - All Media Types — As we've approved The Hunger Games films and novels separately. Because participants can choose both in a request or offer, we felt All Media Types was superfluous. Again, we're absolutely open to discussion on this next year.

  • Signups open Tuesday, July 18th @ 8:00 AM PDT. (Compare to your time. See the current time in Los Angeles.)

If you have any questions or concerns about the tagset, please comment here or email crossoveringmods@gmail.com.

Otherwise, we'll see you at signups! We look forward to taking advantage of all the changes to this year's exchange—and we hope you are, too!

    Nominations are now closed!

Nominations have now officially closed. We'd like to thank all of you who took the time to nominate, and we sincerely hope to see you all at sign-ups when they begin on July 18.

Until then, please make sure to watch this space. Although we don't expect to have as many questionable fandoms as we have in previous years, there may still be questions we have for nominators, so be on the lookout. We will begin approving fandoms right away and will continue through the next day or so until we have a complete tagset. We plan on getting the tagset up as soon as we can, thus giving everyone time to peruse the list of fandoms before sign-ups open.

You may notice during this process that some of your fandoms will be listed as rejected or approved at AO3. But, please keep in mind that this does not necessarily reflect what will or won't appear in the final tag set. (Should your fandom be listed as approved, it likely is. Should your fandom be listed as rejected, it may be approved under a different tag.) Once the tag set is complete, we will make it public and post here to let everyone know that the review period is over and if there are any issues or discrepancies with your nominations, you can let us know at that time.

    Thanks again for nominating!

    Reading, Listening, Watching

Reading: Still Crime and Punishment. I have reached part 2. I'm finding Raskolnikov, the protagonist, somewhat irritating though, unlike Anna Karenina, I assume this is deliberate and much of the book is intended to be a study of poor decision making, its causes and effects.

Listening: I've come late to The Ood Cast, currently in a fore-shortened form as "The Ood One Out". It is a little self-satisfied, but it is interesting to hear a fan podcast where most of the participants are professionals and so mingle skits and songs with episode discussion. I don't think I shall go back and listen to the back catalog, as I have with some other podcasts, but I've been happy enough to listen along to the Oods reactions to the latest season.

Watching: B. is away again and G. and I do not currently have a watching project. So there hasn't been a lot of watching this week.

    Final schedule for Yuletide 2017

Nominations Friday Sept 8 - Saturday Sept 16
    Sign-ups Sunday Oct 1 - Monday Oct 9
Assignments out by Sunday Oct 15
    Default deadline Monday Dec 11
    Assignment deadline Monday Dec 18

Please note that this is a week earlier than the draft schedule we previously posted.

    New Year’s Resolutions notification

If you took part in Yuletide and defaulted after the default deadline, or you submitted an incomplete story at the posting deadline, or you defaulted in Yuletide twice in a row, we ask you to complete a New Year’s Resolution story before you sign up again.

We have just sent an email to everyone who was added to our NYR list after Yuletide 2016. We don’t want you to get to Yuletide 2017, try to sign up, and realise at this late juncture that you are under a restriction.

The email we use is the one currently associated with your AO3 account. If you have any doubt about whether you fulfilled the Yuletide challenge last year, please check your AO3 account details to see what email address the message was sent to. It’s also possible that our message has gone to your spam folder.

You are welcome to comment here or to email yuletideadmin@gmail.com and ask if you are on the list of people who need to complete a New Year’s Resolution fic.

If you defaulted in a previous year, you may still be on our NYR list.

More information about New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s Resolution fics written for the purpose of re-qualifying for Yuletide must be posted to the New Year's Resolutions 2017 collection before you sign up to Yuletide 2017. They must be over 1,000 words and written to a previous Yuletide prompt. You can write for a Yuletide 2016 prompt, or you can choose an older Yuletide prompt as long as the fandom in which you write is small enough to still qualify for Yuletide (that is: when adding the total fics on AO3 and ff.net, there are fewer than 1,000 fics that are in English, complete, and over 1,000 words long).

The New Year’s Resolution system exists for several reasons:
    • It's an incentive to encourage people either to default early, or, to push on through and post something

    • It works as a warm-up, or as practice, or as a way of proving to yourself you can finish a story to a prompt

    • It's a contribution to the project of getting more stories written in tiny fandoms

    • It's a way of ensuring that past prompts don't get entirely forgotten.

If you had to default in a past year, we are aware that this may have been for a carefully-considered reason or in a difficult time. Needing to complete a NYR does not mean we think you're a terrible person. We hope you use it as an opportunity to write something you enjoy.

You are also welcome to submit a NYR story if you just feel like writing one! The collection will stay open for late fills until Yuletide 2017 assignments are sent out.

Writers are especially encouraged to write stories for prompts that were not filled during the main Yuletide run.
