Leonard clenched his jaw to keep himself from opening his mouth as he watched his fiancée flutter around their quarters like a chicken with her head cut off. Really, his Christine was usually one of the most level headed people he’d ever known, but the thought of the upcoming arrival had her in all sorts of a tizzy. He shook his head and reached out to halt her fussing.
“We gotta get to the transporter room, darlin’. It’s time.” She let out one final, smothered scream and settled herself with one quick shake.
“Alright. It’s just.. Are you sure I don’t need to-”
“You’re fine.” His voice held his normal implacable tone, but the slight smile on his face softened the effect. “Darlin’ you have nothing to worry about. She’s gonna love you.”
Christine still didn’t look convinced, but she allowed him to drag her out into the corridors and toward their destination. The hand she had on his elbow got tighter and tighter as the transporter room came into view, and he had to work hard to keep from wincing. It wouldn't do for the crew to see their big, bad, CMO coming to tears over a little thing like nails digging into his skin.
Then they were through the door, and the shimmer of the incoming transport drew his attention away from the pain. The lights faded, and there stood his baby girl, now a teen, hair a mess, and murky green eyes glowing. He felt a punch to his gut: when the hell had she gotten so grown up? She took two running steps in his direction, but then pulled up short, those same eyes wide as she looked his fiancée over. Then she shook her head and looked up at him solemnly, only the faintest twitch of her lips given away any sign of mischief.
“Mother should never meet her, Daddy.” He felt Christine tense for a moment before Joanna broke out in a wide grin. “Younger, smarter, famous, and a natural blonde. Yeah, Mother's going to hate her.” She launched herself at the stunned Christine and wrapped her arms around her. “I like you already!”
